Two massive Greenpoint developments have North Brooklyn residents cheering after they announced additional affordable housing provisions.
The projects, which won City Council approval last week, will eventually bring a 20-acre, 10-tower “mini-neighborhood” to the Greenpoint waterfront, which has many locals perturbed.
But the developer, Read Property Group, surprised everyone when it granted seven of their lots on the site to two local nonprofits to build senior-specific affordable housing, local advocate Rob Solano told DNAinfo.
“No one thought these guys were going to commit to senior housing. This is a huge deal,” Solano, executive director of Churches United for Fair Housing, said. Churches United is working with the nonprofit Los Sures to build 86 units for seniors on 74,000-square-feet of space at the site. “They sold us the lots for one dollar,” Solano added.
Read Property Group also pledged $250,000 total over two years to an anti-displacement fund, according to Solano. [DNAinfo] –Christopher Cameron
